Brooklyn Porta Johns connects builders, homeowners, industrial tenants and event organizers in East New York, Brooklyn, with rental companies for porta potties, handwashing stations, restroom trailers and holding tanks. This part of Brooklyn has three different kinds of job going at once. Mid-rise apartment buildings are rising on the corridors the city rezoned in 2016. On the residential blocks, owners are renovating semi-detached houses, two- to four-family homes and 1980s rowhouses, many of which have something much of Brooklyn lacks: a driveway.
Why so many East New York lots have fences and cranes
The City Council approved the East New York Neighborhood Plan on April 20, 2016. Prepared by the Department of City Planning with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, it covers a 190-block area that includes Cypress Hills and Ocean Hill.
The rezoned area takes in stretches of Atlantic Avenue, Pitkin Avenue, Fulton Street and Liberty Avenue. The city's planning study had described Atlantic as lined with gas stations, car washes, auto repair shops and storage buildings, with few homes. Rezoning for higher density on corridors like that is why so much of the building here is apartment construction rather than one-family renovation.
For a site super, that means a crew count that climbs through the job and a building that eventually outgrows a unit at the gate. Size the order for the busiest phase with construction porta potty rental, and once the crew is working several floors up, look at high-rise jobsite units instead of sending everyone down to the street. Getting a service truck to the site
City planners call Atlantic Avenue the widest corridor in the neighborhood and one of the main thoroughfares in Brooklyn. It is part of the through truck network between boroughs, and Pennsylvania Avenue is a local truck route that links up with Linden Boulevard and Broadway.
The same planning work noted that left turns from westbound Atlantic Avenue into the industrial area and onto Pennsylvania Avenue were not allowed, and that many of the narrow, one-way streets south of Atlantic are hard for large trucks to turn in. Street rules change, so treat that as a reason to describe your approach rather than as a current map.
Give the rental company the address and the direction the site gate faces. Say whether the curb in front is a bus stop, a loading zone or open parking. On an avenue lot, ask whether the driver will service from the avenue or from the side street, and leave room at that curb on service days.
North of the industrial area, the Atlantic Avenue viaduct separates it from Broadway Junction, where the A, C, J, Z and L trains meet beside the Long Island Rail Road's East New York station. Crews coming in by train arrive there; for a site near the junction, put the unit on the side of the lot facing the station entrance so nobody has to walk around the block.
Warehouses, bus yards and the industrial business zone
The East New York Industrial Business Zone runs roughly between East New York and Atlantic Avenues on the north and Sutter Avenue on the south, from Powell Street east to Sheffield Avenue. It is one of six IBZs in Brooklyn. City planners counted over 4,000 jobs there, with nearly half in transportation and warehousing.
That work shapes the requests. A warehouse with a small permanent staff may need an extra unit during a racking install or a roof replacement. A yard running a seasonal fleet may want a unit for drivers who never go inside the building. A metal or auto shop taking on a coatings job may need a handwashing station alongside the toilet.
What makes a yard job simple

East New York's residential blocks are mostly semi-detached homes, two- to four-family houses and apartment buildings, with owner-occupied rowhouses built under the Nehemiah program in the 1980s on land the city provided. Low-density zoning here requires front yards and off-street parking on new houses, so recent infill often comes with a parking pad. Cypress Hills and events at Highland Park
Highland Park covers about 141 acres above Cypress Hills, with Queens on its northern side. It grew up around the old Ridgewood Reservoir, which supplied Brooklyn with water until 1959. A family reunion, a church picnic or a youth league's opening day on its lawns is the kind of gathering that needs units brought in.
Organized gatherings there go through an NYC Parks permit, and units belong inside the area the permit gives you. The park is hilly, so ask the rental company how close its truck can get to your spot and whether the ground is level enough; an ADA accessible unit in particular needs a flat, firm approach.
Down the hill, Fulton Street is Cypress Hills' local shopping street: two- and three-story buildings with stores below and apartments above, and the J and Z trains running overhead. A storefront renovation there has the elevated structure's columns and a busy curb to contend with, so look first for a rear yard or a spot inside the space. North of Atlantic Avenue, the blocks are lower rowhouses and detached homes, where a side yard often solves the problem.

East New York questions from sites and homes
Which is easier for a truck: a site on Atlantic Avenue or one on a side street?
Atlantic Avenue itself is a through truck route, so getting to the block is rarely the problem. The hard part is stopping: a curb on a wide, fast avenue may have little room to pull over. A side-street site is slower to reach but usually easier to service. Tell the rental company which way the building faces and where the site gate opens.
Can a porta potty go on the driveway of a semi-detached house in Cypress Hills?
Usually, if the driveway belongs to your half of the house and the unit stays behind the sidewalk. Shared driveways are the catch. If the neighbor uses the same strip to reach their garage, agree on the spot with them first, since the unit and the service truck will both affect their access.
