Renovating inside the Stuyvesant Heights historic districts

On April 16, 2013, the LPC designated the Bedford-Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District: about 825 buildings, roughly between Tompkins Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard, from Macon and Halsey streets down to Fulton Street.

The new district surrounds the smaller Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, designated in 1971, and more than doubled the protected area. The Commission found it more than 85 percent residential, built mostly between about 1895 and 1900, with long blocks of brick and brownstone houses tied together by iron newel posts, railings, fences and window grilles.

The city's Landmarks Law requires an LPC permit before work that affects the exterior of a designated property. For a facade restoration, new windows or stoop repair, that permit sets the start date, so book the unit for the day the crew can begin, not the day you sign the contract.

The ironwork is the part a portable toilet can damage. Don't let anyone strap a unit to a historic fence or railing to steady it, and keep it far enough from the areaway fence that a gust or a bump won't push it into the metal. Storefront and building work along Fulton Street

Fulton Street is Bed-Stuy's main commercial street, crossing Bedford, Nostrand and Stuyvesant avenues, with the A and C trains running underneath. Restoration Plaza sits on it at 1368 Fulton. The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, founded in 1967 with Senator Robert F. Kennedy among its founders, bought a full block of industrial buildings there, including a former milk bottling plant from 1915, and built the plaza out in 1975.

A store fit-out or a mixed-use building on Fulton has less room to work with than a house block. Subway entrances and busy sidewalks leave little space at the curb, so look for a rear yard, a loading area or room on the ground floor inside first. When the unit has to go at the curb, pick a stretch away from the subway stairs and the corner, and ask the rental company what time of day its truck can stop on Fulton for service visits.

Planning a block party on a Bed-Stuy street

If your block association is organizing the summer block party, put the toilets on the list early rather than the week before. On a closed street the units go inside the permitted stretch, and the street activity permit decides the hours. Book drop-off for before the street closes and pickup for after it reopens, because a truck can't drive a street full of tables and folding chairs.

The stoops change where the units can stand. Every house on the block has its steps coming down to the sidewalk, so there's no blank wall to put units against. The end of the block, near the barricade and away from anyone's door, tends to be the least disruptive spot, and it's the easiest for the truck to reach.

Events at Herbert Von King Park

The park fills the block bounded by Lafayette, Tompkins, Greene and Marcy avenues, about 7.8 acres. It dates to 1857, when it was created as Tompkins Park. It took its current name in 1985 in honor of the community organizer Herbert Von King, and its recreation center has an amphitheater.
