For a building that fronts the parkway, that layout decides everything. The address sits on a service road, the curb in front of it belongs to that service road, and the malls with their benches and bike path are not a place for equipment. A delivery truck works from the service road too, so the driver needs to know which side of the parkway you're on and which cross street to turn in from.

Houses on the side streets have the same question with less traffic. On blocks like Park Place, Sterling Place or St. Johns Place, measure the gap between parked cars and the tree pits before you promise the rental company a spot, because tree pits and hydrants take more curb than people expect.

If a unit is serving a renovation on or near the parkway, ask the rental company to pick it up before the holiday weekend or service it on the Friday and leave it where it is only if it sits behind the property line. A service truck can't reach a closed street, and a unit on the service road can end up inside a barricaded zone.

Hosting relatives for the parade at a house nearby? The street will likely be closed on the day, so the unit has to be in the backyard or the driveway before the Sunday night closures begin. Ask for pickup on Tuesday, once the barriers are gone and parking is back to normal.

Landmarked rowhouse blocks and where a unit fits

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated three Crown Heights North historic districts, in 2007, 2011 and 2015. The third, about 640 buildings, reaches east from Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues to Albany Avenue, so part of it lies inside 11213. It covers rowhouses built from about 1870, Renaissance Revival rows, flats buildings and a large group of "Kinko" two-family houses from the early 1900s.

Owners in a historic district need an LPC permit before most exterior work, so facade, window and stoop jobs here often start later than the crew expected. Book the unit for the actual start, not the hoped-for one. Then pick the spot:

  • The front areaway

    The paved or planted space between the sidewalk and the house, usually behind a low fence. It keeps the unit off city property. Measure the gate opening, and check that the unit won't block the stairs down to the garden-level door that the crew uses.

  • The curb out front

    Common when the areaway is too small or holds the dumpster bags. The unit is then on the roadway and needs city approval. Ask for it to be placed with the door facing the sidewalk, not the traffic lane.

  • The backyard

    Rarely practical on an attached block, since the only way in is through the house. A service truck has to pump the unit with a hose from the street, and a deep lot plus a long hallway is usually past its reach.

  • Inside, on the garden floor

    Possible during a gut renovation with a straight path from the entrance. Ask the rental company before you plan on it, because it has to be able to reach the unit on every visit.

The super usually knows whether the building has a courtyard, a basement entrance or a spot by the trash area that stays out of the tenants' way. Ask before you book, and have the super's number ready for the driver.

Brower Park sits at Brooklyn and St. Marks Avenues, and the Brooklyn Children's Museum, founded in 1899 and the first children's museum in the country, is built into its grounds. Further east, Lincoln Terrace Park fills the blocks between Buffalo and Rochester Avenues on Eastern Parkway, right beside the parade's starting point.

Family days, church picnics and community cookouts in these parks need an NYC Parks permit, and the units have to stand inside the area that permit covers. On a paved plaza a truck may be able to drive close. On a lawn, ask where it has to stop, because a short carry for the driver becomes a long walk for your guests once the unit is set down farther away.

Can a porta potty stay on an Eastern Parkway service road over Labor Day?

Plan on it not being there. In 2025 the city closed Eastern Parkway from Ralph Avenue west to Grand Army Plaza for the parade, along with the side streets feeding into it, and a unit parked in that zone is in the way of barriers and crowds. Have it picked up before the weekend and redelivered on Tuesday, or move it onto private ground behind the property line.

My brownstone is in the Crown Heights North historic district. Does the porta potty need Landmarks approval?

The Landmarks Preservation Commission reviews work on the building, such as facade, window and stoop changes, and that permit has to be in hand before the work starts. A freestanding unit at the curb is a sidewalk and roadway question for the city, covered on the permits and placement page. If you want it in the front areaway, ask your architect or expediter whether anything about that spot touches your LPC application.

Can I book units for a party in Brower Park or Lincoln Terrace Park myself?

Only as part of an NYC Parks event permit. Parks decides whether your gathering needs one and where equipment may stand. Once the permit names your area, give the rental company the park entrance closest to it and ask how close its truck is allowed to drive.

Does the 11213 list include Prospect Heights or the blocks around Nostrand Avenue?
